Tradition room Jean Baptiste Donatien De Vimeur, Marquis De Rochambeau (1725-1807), french General

Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur was born in Vendôme in July 1725 and, at the age of 16, embarked on a military career which was to take him to all the battlefields in Europe. His action was particularly remarkable in the Austrian War of Succession and in the Seven Years' War.
In 1779, he was chosen by Louis XVI to lead an expeditionary force to assist in the American War of Independence. He fought with La Fayette, and alongside George Washington, in the battle of Yorktown.

On his return to a country racked by the Revolution, he was promoted in 1791 to the rank of Marshal of France before being thrown in the Conciergerie prison. Robespierre's death saved him from the guillotine, and he ended his days in his château in Rochambeau.

Tradition room François Emmanuel, Count De Saint-Priest (1735-1821), ambassador to the Ottoman Sultans' Court

When François Emmanuel, Count of Saint-Priest, returned to Paris in 1749, his only ambition was to serve the king.
Although he was fascinated by the gilded sumptuousness of court life, he had no hesitation in quitting the pomp and circumstance of Versailles for a life at sea, on the Mediterranean, in pursuit of barbarous pirates. He then was sent as ambassador to Constantinople in order to maintain a French presence during the war between Russia and the Sublime Porte.
He returned to France on the eve of the Revolution. During the events in 1789, he was resolutely on the royalists' side, and advised the king to act firmly against the rioters. His advice was not followed, and he was moreover charged with high treason against the Nation. He went to England and joined fellow émigrés.

Tradition room Adrienne De Noailles (1759-1807), wife of  Marquis de Lafayette

Adrienne de Noailles was 14 years old when she married Gilbert Motier de Lafayette. For nearly 20 years, the young Marquise de Lafayette's existence was divided between the sumptuous life at court in Versailles and more peaceful episodes on her estates in the provinces. She stayed many times in Reignac, which her husband had inherited.
On 10th September 1792, her world collapsed: she was arrested and transferred to Paris, where she joined her mother, sister and grandmother who were all guillotined in 1794. Madame de Lafayette was only saved from the same fate through the sudden death of Robespierre.
In 1795, she and her daughters joined the Marquis de Lafayette in prison in Olmüz, where she shared his abominable conditions of detention.
Biographies of her show her to have been a woman of enormous strength of character and unfailing courage.

Tradition room Sir Howard Carter (1874-1939), english Egyptologist

Howard Carter learnt painting from his father, and it was thanks to this skill that, aged 17, he joined the Egyptian Exploration Fund, headed by Percy Newberry. Carter was quick to learn, and in 1899 was appointed Inspector of Upper Egyptian Antiquities.

In 1907, he met Lord Carnarvon who was looking for an excavations Supervisor. This was the start of a long period excavating in different areas with scant results. Carter and his patron showed unstinting patience and tenacity until finally, on 4th November 1922, the first few steps of a staircase descending into the earth were uncovered.

The steps led to a small tomb, the smallest in the Valley of Kings. But the tomb was intact. Tutankhamun, a little known pharaoh from the late 18th dynasty, who had disappeared from history, had re-emerged.

Tradition room Marie D'agoult (1805-1876), woman of letters

Marie de Flavigny married Viscount Charles-Louis d'Agoult aged 22. In 1833, Marie met Franz Liszt at the Marquise Le Vayer's. They both soon fell passsionately in love, and the Countess d'Agoult left husband and children in order to live with her lover in Paris.
She played hostess to the artistic élite of the time: Chopin, Berlioz, Ingres, Sand … Her daughter, Cosima, married von Bülow, the orchestra conductor, and left him in order to live with Wagner. Heredity? Marie and Frantz love affair continued until 1844, when the one's unfaithfulness and the other's jealousy brought about their separation.
Marie was further known for her writing. In 1844 in fact, a novel entitled 'Nélicia' was published, the story of a painter whose talent failed after breaking up with his mistress. Coincidence?

Born in 1867, he is the son of a famous french neurologist, Jean-Martin Charcot. True to his father's wishes, Jean Baptiste Charcot became a doctor himself but his first love was for sailing and the sea, and the doctor turned explorer.

From 1905 to his death, he organized, mostly towards the antartic, a then unknown continent, scientific expeditions resuling in new coasts and countries discoveries, studies of the earth magnetism and solar radiations, zoological surveys of polar fauna.
