The rooms are dedicated to illustrious persons who lived or stayed at Reignac. The decor and the chosen pieces of period furniture aim at recreating the atmosphere most familiar to these great names in history, while insuring the hosts all the comfort of a luxury hotel.

Prestige room Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis De Lafayette (1757-1834), french Politician

In 1775, aged 17, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, was in Versailles.  But, feeling passionately about the cause of the American colonials, he refused a position at Court and, against the king's wishes, secretly organised his departure for the New World. He contributed to the rebel forces' successes, namely the capture of Yorktown.

Back in France, La Fayette was received as a triumphant hero, but was forced to sell off part of his family's possessions in order to pay off his debts. He sold the château and estates of Reignac, the inheritance of his mother, Louise-Julie de la Rivière.

He first sympathized with the progressive ideas of the French Revolution but soon became suspect to all. During the Terror, he fled abroad. He attempted, unsuccessfully, to save Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette from the guillotine.

Prestige room Pauline Bonaparte, Princess Borghese (1780-1825)

The youngest sister of Emperor Napoleon, Pauline Bonaparte married in 1803 Prince Camillo Borghese. Of mediocre intelligence, the prince was nonetheless a handsome man with a very comfortable income.

The young Princess Borghese was young and flighty: she posed naked for  Canova, the sculptor, and travelled frequently to France, gradually abandoning her husband for amorous adventures that she never sought to conceal.

After Napoleon's abdication, she returned to Rome seeking reconciliation with her husband. He was by then living with the Duchess della Rovere as man and wife, and refused Pauline. She dragged her husband before the lawcourts, and, because of his extra-marital affair, managed to obtain a settlement which, amongst other things, gave her the use of the Villa Borghese where she continued her love affairs...

Tradition room Sebastiâo Jose De Carvalho e Mello, Marquis Of Pombal (1699-1782), portuguese Prime Minister

Throughout his life, Pombal sought to overcome his modest provincial origins in the gentry.
He occupied several lesser ministerial positions before being appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs by Joseph I, the new Portuguese king. Intelligent and politically able, Pombal soon exerted great influence, but it was his energetic action after the Lisbon earthquake that earned him the monarch's absolute trust. He was  made Prime Minister, and later given the title of Marquis of Pombal in 1770.
Economically, the Marquis of Pombal developed Portuguese trade and industry, managing to make his country less dependent on England.
Today, Pombal is considered by the Portuguese to be one of their greatest statesmen.

The small building adjoining the south side of the château is a 19th century addition. This room was Alexandre Müller's billiard room.

MAIN COURTYARD SIDE

Salons Louis de Barberin

The fireplace and the over-mantel are original, dating from the early 18th century. The fire back bears Louis de Barberin's coat of arms and his motto, Bellicae Virtutis Premium. The Barberin arms can also be seen above the château entrance and in the chapel.

The main staircase and the handrail date back to the period when Louis de Barbarin undertook the re-building of the château. He kept the west side of the old château, the stairway partly obscuring the pre-existing opening.

One of the portraits that decorate the walls is that of Armand de Saint Germain, a member of the Order of Saint Louis, in which Louis de Barbarin held the rank of Commander.

MAIN COURTYARD SIDE
Prestige room Marie Duplessis (1824-1847), parisian courtisan

In 1844, Alexandre Dumas, son, met Marie Duplessis, who became his mistress and was the inspiration for the character of Marguerite Gauthier, the heroine of La Dame aux Camélias. The novel was published in 1848, and its theatre adaptation was immensely popular.
More than 20 years after the novel appeared, Dumas was to write: "The person on whom I modelled the heroine of La Dame aux Camélias was called Alphonsine Duplessis, but she had composed for herself the more euphonious and refined named of Marie Duplessis. She was tall, very slender, with black hair, a pink and white complexion. Her head was small, her eyes elongated and bright as Japanese enamel, but keen and fine, her lips were cherry-red, and her teeth the most beautiful in the world; she was like a Saxe figurine. »
